THE ORIGINALS 1.18 "The Big Uneasy" Recap: This Place About to Blow

Previously on “The Originals:” Elijah announced he’ll take control of New Orleans if Klaus won’t and got every faction – vampires, witches, werewolves, and humans – to sign a peace treaty; Genevieve creeped on Marcel and Cami doing the nasty with her dreamcatcher (honey, I dream of that, too); Davina didn’t bitch-slap Mean Girl Monique; and Klaus offered the werewolves a moonlight ring, a possible key to the city – much growling ensued.

The episode opens the morning after some wild whoopee. Genevieve knows full well why Klaus is keeping her around but quickly makes it clear that she has her own agenda, too, when the duo interrupt Elijah’s home renovations at the vampire compound. As a show of good faith, Elijah grants Genevieve freedom to celebrate feast days – like “The Feast of the Blessings,” which is basically Christmas for witches only instead of Jesus the party is for the three girls the coven killed to become more powerful. 

Speaking of those poor girls…Davina and her fellow got-their-throats-slit-for-the-Harvest peers are doing some whacky yoga moves and creepy chanting when Monique channels the ancestors, who demand that Genevieve dies so the fourth Harvest girl can be resurrected. Genevieve ultimately convinces them that she has one last task to complete before she dies (again): she plans to steal Esther Mikaelson’s grimoire in order to give the witches unlimited power so they’ll never be under the thumb of anyone ever again. Unfortunately, her plan to steal the spell-book while everyone’s at the big party goes terribly wrong and Klaus gives her the hands of the flunky she tasked with the crime in a beautiful little box, appalled that she ever thought he was stupid enough to leave the book unattended. Unfortunately for Klaus, his attempt to help Cami save her Uncle Kieran is blown to bits with this one move. Genevieve tells Klaus that she agreed to help Cami but now she’s rescinding her offer. She then swiftly reveals to Klaus of the nookie the psych-student and Marcel made before sweeping off like a badass. Unfortunately for her, Monique is ready to stab the redheaded witch as soon as the party’s over – that is, until she goes all “Exorcist” and receives a new message from the Ancestors: Genevieve can live if they kill Klaus’ child instead.

Elsewhere in the episode, Elijah struggles to maintain his authority in the French Quarter – convincing the vampires, humans, and werewolves to participate in the witches’ big party as a sign of peace - and Marcel begins his campaign against the Originals by crashing the bonanza with a drumline dressed in white that cuts their wrists and is devoured by the vampires in attendance, leaving a single message behind in their wake: “There will be no peace.” Elijah finds Marcel not long after and rips out Thierry’s heart to remind Marcel that Elijah alone decides whether Marcel lives or dies. But that doesn’t put Marcel off his mission. When burning his right-hand man’s body, the vampires arrive to offer Marcel their support in overthrowing the Originals once and for all.

Later, Elijah finds Klaus and, after a brief kerfuffle, informs his troubled brother that he will no longer cater to Klaus’ wishes. If he wants something, he will take it, no longer regarding what’s best for his brother’s redemption.

Hayley proves to be quite the “queen” - Klaus’ word - by forcing the truth about their alliance with Klaus out of scruffy, wolf-boy Jackson and drawling, dirty-blonde Oliver. She attends the witches’ party, representing the pack, and is injured in the blowout – which upsets both Elijah and Klaus. She then rebounds with a bit of “Kumbaya” around a campfire with her pack as Elijah secretly watches from a distance.

Davina also gets put through the ringer, contending with Mean Girl Monique’s wide-eyed and unblinking condescension for the episode. While the other two Harvest Girls receive offerings from the party-goers, Davina gets none until Klaus hands her his apologies for his past crimes and a small box – containing a ring and the incantation to create a daylight ring for Josh. Perhaps he’s starting to win the young witch back.

So what lies ahead? According to the previews, Klaus, guilty about his role in turning Genevieve against Cami, tries to help her save her cursed Uncle. Also, the werewolf camp goes kaboom? Color me intrigued.
